Thursday in the Garden With Jonesie

I really wanted to find some birdies in the garden this week. Every September, the wild pigeons return to eat the berries on one of our trees. They did not cooperate one bit and I couldn't catch a picture of them in spite of my efforts to get a claw in one.
I did help my mom harvest some more basil and parsley and she made another big batch of pesto. Because I really wanted to participate in Tweet Week, I deputized my woofie Grete to go on special assignment in the field.
Grete here! Any chance to go for a ride in the car and go somewhere is cool with me. I was given a specific assignment from Jonesie. Find the swifts! Well being the smart woofie I am, they are not hard to find in Portland. Every year, the cute little buggers arrive at Chapman School and put on a show for everyone. I arrived early and scoped out the grounds.

I looked left and I looked left again.

Then I looked to the sky. At first there weren't too many of the birdies, but then more and more arrived. Then they started swirling around the big chimney. I was a good girl and didn't bark at them at all.
Jonesie wanted me to bring one back as a souvenir but I couldn't do it. The birdies started dropping one by one by hundreds into the chimney for a nice evenings snooze.

This has been special correspondent Grete, reporting on behalf of Master Gardener and bird catcher wannabe Jonesie.

Grete! It is so good that on occasion the kitties use your special skills for outside assignments. Our momma likes to see you cuz she likes to see dogs and cats. We have two dogs and we like them PURRty much fine. That is, as long as they don't get in our way.

We had to look up what birds they are - but how impressed we are! Grete, you handled this assignment perfectly! That must have looked so beautiful. And you didn't even bark!? Impressed, very much so.

You did a good job finding the fev-vers Grete. We get lots of swifts and swallows here too. They swoop down and dive bomb us. They are very fast, but one day they will be sorrythey teased us.

Good field work Grete... but our human wants to know "why" all those birdies go into the chimbley? Hopefully no one will start a fire below. Seems to be a very odd thing they are
doing.

Special Reporter Grete did a good job! We have birdies that nest in our fireplace chimney effury year. Mom says your basil looks a whole lot better than hers does.

Awesome corresponding, Grete! You showed great reserve in not barking, too. If we saw that many birdies at one time, we would not be so reserved, if you know what we mean. ;-)

PS. Hi, Cory! :-)

Nice basil there, Jonesie! You've outdone yourself (again). And Grete sure knows where to find the birdies, but not how to catch 'em. Better luck next time, all!

Oh I so missed doing my gardening spot ~ but reading yours made up for it. Grete was fantastic and the pics of the birdies brilliant.

Thank you for all the good wishes for Mom.
