Time to start our weekly Society of Feline Gardeners meeting!
This past weekend was super soggy at our place. It bucketed down rain so not much happened outside. This is my view out my back door.
And this is Ellie consoling Ginger who refuses to get her paws wet.
Eventually the raindrops stopped falling from the sky and I went outside to see my soggy garden.
I ended up staying pretty close to the house.
There is a grape arbor close by that has some table grapes growing. Our few wine grapes were beyond hope. There was nothing I could do to purr them back to health and happiness. I think that's what breaks my heart the most as a garden cat. You can do everything right, you can paw at the soil just so...and all it takes is a rainy soggy year and a poor showing by Mr. Sun and everything is a mess.
Just look at my tomatoes! Dad managed to salvage enough to make some salsa, but my dreams of having enough for spaghetti sauce were crushed.
You just have to be willing to accept what mother nature dishes out. Maybe I should start letting go of what could have been this year and start focusing on my plans for next year's garden. I can feel a little chill in the air, so the thought of days by the fireplace sleeping on a good gardening book are starting to sound pretty good to me.

ReplyDeleteWish I had some of that rain here since it was very, very hot once again. A true Indian Summer.
Our grapes were had by the birds and some ground animals, your look real good. It has been a few years since dad had a vegetable garden due to his health.

ReplyDeleteThanks for the stroll, that rain would keep us under the covers! Where we live a few hundred miles south of you, it was our coldest Summer in 40 years. Our tomatoes are pretty pathetic. It is definitely time to start planning next year's garden. Our first plan is gopher-proofing our garden beds.

ReplyDeleteHow true Jonesie. You can do all you can do but ultimately it's up to Mother Nature to give the thumbs up or thumbs down to your garden. Ours wasn't the greatest this year either.....

ReplyDeleteJonesie, it was a rough year for gardens everywhere! We don't plant vegetables, but a lot of mom's flowers and plants didn't do well this year either...too hot and humid!!

With our unusually hot and dry summer, our tomatoes didn't stand a chance this year. Our garden was only a memory by mid August and is nothing but a memory, now. Next year will be better, so maybe Bleubeard will be able to join in your blog hop, Jonesie. He sure wants to play with you, Cory, and the rest of your family soon.
ReplyDeleteYou definitely did your best. We do have to go with the flow of Mother Earth/Nature, so there's no point in getting upset, not when our livelihood doesn't depend on our garden, at any rate. You did a great job this year, we thought! Very impressive, Jonesie!

I'm so sorry Jonsie that the rain has caused disappointment in your garden. I think your idea of snoozing by the fire while you regroup and plan for next year sounds very good!
ReplyDeleteHi Jonesie! We are sorry that the garden wasn't what you had hoped for this year, but that is how it is with a garden - never what you expect. The grapes do look very pretty - we hope they taste ok. And we are sorry that there weren't enough tomatoes for sauce, but salsa is good too! We think you are smart to start thinking of next year - the fall is definitely here and that means it isn't too long before winter comes! And if it makes you feel any better, our indoor garden isn't doing too good either (but mom used old seeds so it is her own fault).
ReplyDeleteJonsie, we are purring that you get some sun and maybe a few late tomatoes. I didn't try for any veggies this year and it's a good thing; our summer was scorching! Daddy is going to make me a cold frame so maybe next year I can do some veggies...in Vegas we harvest tomatoes in MAY!
ReplyDeleteWe are purraying the sun comes out and is able to redden your 'matoes. BUT...you can take all the green ones and make pickled tomatoes. They are DELISH! Skeeter is the only one who likes them, but mom LOVES them!

Patience and a deeply philosophical approach seem to be the most important requirements for this gardening business. We admire you so much, Jonesie!
ReplyDeleteNo, there is not much you can do in a soggy garden. Our mum didn't grow much this year because she got fed up with all the wet summers ruining her vegetables. She only grew greenhouse tomatoes and they turned out better than she expected.
